GRAPHIC STYLE

Researching various layout formats, moods, graphics, and aesthetics are the brand book elements that I have been focusing on this week. In order to pull inspiration and ideas for my own pages I have been taking influence from concept driven, lifestyle and culture magazines such as Plastique, and Rika Magazine. The pages above communicate a quirky and artistic nature, which are visually stimulating for their audience. I am keen to adopt and incorporate this type of creative style into my own LSOLE brand book however; I will need to think about the positioning of my own photography in relation to artwork and text as I don’t want to over complicate page composition, but rather keep everything sleek and bold. I want my brand book to look professional, premium and refined. To achieve this I will only be using large text and ‘busy’ layered page styles every so often. I have created a graphics and layout page here on Pinterest as a way of effectively communicating what I visually want to achieve with my own brand book.

PHOTO-SHOOT OBJECTIVES: COMMUNICATING THE LSOLE WOMAN

Aims and objectives of the photo-shoot: Questions to be communicated.
-Who is the LSOLE woman?
-What does she look like?
-What is her style?
-How does she choose to represent herself?
-What is her character like and how would this communicate the identity of the brand?
Key words that describe an LSOLE woman and relate to the brand's identity:
Adventurous
Healthy
Natural
Free
Empowered
Striking
Sun seeker
Ambitious
Prolific
Fashion forward
Goddess-like
Intelligent
Selfless
Charismatic
I have created a series of mood boards that communicate and reflect each aspect of the intended photo-shoot. This planning is important as it helps me to realise and think ahead to my final outcomes of the shoot. These concept boards will guarantee that I keep on task to achieve to best results for my final major project. The first three hair and makeup style boards envisage the type of looks I would like to adopt for my model. In addition, also keeping in line with my predicted SS15 trend concept 'Antevorta' derived from the Roman meaning of goddess of the future.

Styling Mood Board
The style direction for this shoot will be free spirited, relaxed lounge clothes such as white tees, runner shorts, bralets, over sized jackets, structured trousers and crop tops to illustrate the natural temperament and day-to-day life of an LSOLE woman. I will also be incorporating swimwear pieces and intimates as a main focal point of each styled outfit. By showcasing swimwear and lingerie bralets I aim to draw upon and demonstrate the “holiday girl” element of my brand’s unique philosophy. These versatile types of intimate garments worn on the outside express a laid back, care free, and adventurous manner which ultimately personifies the holiday girl attitude and spirit.
-This shoot is to highlight the coolness in an LSOLE woman rather than focusing on her wardrobe.
-Using a sleek styling approach will allow the audience to focus on the person being portrayed and the emotive connotations linked to the model.
-The concept direction is to visually communicate a woman who is comfortable within her own skin.
-She commands self confidence and sex appeal in a sophisticated way.

Shoot location
-Large open spaces and windows in order to use natural lighting as well as studio lighting.
-A modern white studio setting with the use of props such as rustic wooden stools and chairs, fur throws, rugs and other soft furnishings that reflect a personal living space. In addition, illustrating the concept of an LSOLE woman in her home environment.
-Exposed bricks/wood to convey a modern and contemporary style which coincides with the type of place an LSOLE woman would live, as expressed through my 'CASA' board here.
-Neutral backdrop tones such as nudes and white to coincide with the concept of the shoot.
Model Poses
As the concept of this photo-shoot is to focus on the personality and attributes of the LSOLE woman, the poses will be simple yet still representing the powerful attitude and audacious identity of the brands ideal woman. I like the idea of  communicating exaggerated body shapes that evoke connotations of gazing up towards the sun, visualising her love for sun-seeker adventures. I want the model’s poses to be fierce, strong, regimented and androgynous, but then also combining a flirtatious presence to create an equal balance of masculinity and femininity.

PHOTO SHOOT PLANNING

As part of my LSOLE brand book I have decided to produce and direct my own creative photo-shoot to go alongside any other sourced imagery I will use. The photo-shoot I am currently planning will correspond with the ‘LSOLE woman’ section of my brand book; it will be used as a vehicle to effectively communicate the brand’s visual representation and identity. The aim of the photo-shoot will also illustrate the exact ideologies and aesthetic of the target LSOLE woman and her lifestyle traits.

Photo-shoot objectives:
Focus: To represent the typical LSOLE woman, what she would look like and her style.
-Illustrating the LSOLE ‘holiday girl’ philosophy.
-Natural aesthetic, lighting and backdrop.
-Keeping the feel airy and delicate.
-Creating a series of editorials that accurately visualise who the LSOLE woman is.
-Communicating her sense of style and adventurous charisma.
-Fashion forward and contemporary.
-Keeping styled outfits and makeup sleek, powerful and clean cut to cohesively align with brand ethos.

PAGE LAYOUT EXPERIMENTATION

Today I have been experimenting with mock-up page layout designs for my brand book. In order for this book to be professionally executed and cohesive though out it is important that I experiment, refine and develop a style that can be defined within each section. I have been researching different fashion and photography books that influence my own creative ideas, and show strong visual graphics and emotive imagery.

I have decided that my brand book will be portrait A4 size. It is important that I consider all types of layout styles from minimal, soft, girly or overloaded. My own personal preference is that it should be clean cut, sleek and feminine as this reflects LSOLE’s brand aesthetic and identity. It is crucial that the visuals and graphics within the first few pages of the book immediately convey the brand’s style and artistic approach. Visual layout is an effective way of communicating specific ideologies and the brand’s identity. With this said, it is imperative that I define my intended style in the planning stages before I start to create each page in the book.

Below I have been experimenting with some mock-up page layouts and designs:

These are examples of my target consumer and brand identity pages within the first section of the brand book:

The first target consumer board made up of several images in a collage effect visually indicates to the reader the type of environment that an LSOLE woman would live in. This living space and style communicates the type of personality a target consumer would have.

I intend on my brand book being heavily image based with a short summarisation of each topic at the beginning of each page or section. I feel that this layout works very well and draws attention to the emotive visuals, artistry and graphics. I have played around with a collage effect on my images, and also sharp-boxed layouts. At the moment I am unsure as to which image layout I prefer for the brand book, the clean cut boxed outcome works well as it reinforces LSOLE’s sleek, minimal brand aesthetic. With this in mind, I am also drawn to the merging of layered images and graphics as it makes the pages flow cohesively. I will experiment further with combining the two techniques as I feel that the combination of both should communicate a premium and professional outcome.

There will be three main sections to the LSOLE brand book, these will comprise of:

-The Brand Philosophy
-The SS15 trend concept and collection
-Marketing & Promotions

Within each section there will be sub-sections expanding on a specific topic. For example, within ‘The SS15 trend concept and collection” there will be pages documenting the design process, the research and initial inspiration behind the trend, and hand drawn illustrations to add personality to the garments and products. Each section will start with an inspirational and visually stimulating image that acts a key reference point to that section of the book. This will immediately set the tone for the reader. Using minimal and isolated text in each corner of the page will ensure that nothing is taken away from the visuals, but will give clear information to the reader. The minimal and simple graphic approach communicates a refined style. As the section progresses, there will be a heavier use of imagery and writing however for the title page I feel a simple approach works well.

BRAND BOOK CONTENT: BREAKDOWN

In order to start creating and editing my pages for the brand book I have produced a rough mock-up guide of what is required for each page and section of the book. This organised planning will provide me with a path to follow, also ensuring that for each element of the book the required content is fulfilled. In addition, this guide will make it easier for me to keep up-to-date with tasks within my time management plan.

MY MUSE FOR THE COLLECTION: ANTEVORTA

This week I am focusing my attention on getting the design process initiated, and starting my garment and product range plan. I will also be organising a test photo-shoot for my brand book this week. Whilst gathering inspiration for the collection from my own imagery taken in Italy, my attention was drawn to the ethereal ideologies of Roman Goddesses that link closely to religious buildings of past eras. A key reference within my design process is the Roman Goddess “Antevorta”, her name meaning Goddess of the future. This characteristic ties in with my intended trend concept and conveys an intelligent, fashion forward theme. I was drawn in by the interesting historical juxtaposition that this Goddess symbolizes. As trend forecasting processes rely heavily on looking at past influences to guide future predictions, Antevorta is a perfect example of how an ancient religious figure can provide context whilst holding a future driven identity that inspires contemporary fashion. As LSOLE endeavours to highlight the natural beauty and power of a woman and her body, I want the SS15 range to illustrate the future driven nature that Antevorta represents. This ancient Roman Goddess embodies a feminine, powerful and spiritual aesthetic which I aim to capture within the collection and brand ethos.

PINTEREST

The LSOLE brand book will feature heavily around imaged based material to communicate powerful concepts and moods. It is essential that I collect and utilise a variety of sourced images as well as my own primary photographs, focusing on traditional Italian architecture and form. As well as keeping visual research in files on my computer, hard drive, and blog, I have been using Pinterest as a way of collecting inspiration and communicating key ideologies linked with my brand. Pinterest is a quick and helpful way for me to create boards for each section of my brand book. The site also allows me to refine my creative direction in a more efficient format, rather than having hundreds of images in multiple locations on my computer.

LOGO DEVELOPMENT

When considering my brand logo it is important for the final outcome to be cohesively aligned with the ethos of my brand. A successful logo should reflect a professional and contemporary look that emphasises the fashion brand and final major project.

From my tutorial sessions with Laura Marsh and feedback gained from my target market I have decided to re-design the brand logo and develop the name slightly. My original brand name “L.A.Sole” has been replaced to just “LSole”. When discussing this with Laura she made several points suggesting that the “L.A” part of the logo linked too closely to the State of LA in America which did not associate with what I wanted my brand to signify. My surname Sole, also meaning “Soul” paired with the “L.A.” evoked strong connotations of an American theme, which is not how I want my brand to be perceived as.  After careful consideration from Laura, my peers, and target consumer feedback I have removed the “A” and decided that “LSole” embodies the structured and conceptual nature of my brand identity more cohesively.

The first hand drawn/ watercolour paint logo taken from my blog I feel does not make a strong enough impact on my target consumer. From consumer feedback it was noted that the design does not appear to be bold or striking enough to symbolise a successful fashion and lifestyle brand. When discussing with Laura and my classmates it was clear that my logo should embody a more sleek and luxe aesthetic that illustrates the identity of LSole. Taking this on board I played around with graphic layouts, compositions, font and size as seen here.

I liked the idea of combining my own fluid handwriting style with the structured bold lines of digital fonts; this resulted in a creative juxtaposition of graphic styles. As you can see from my development pages I have experimented around with watercolour shapes and colours in the prospect of being able to incorporate these into my logo. Due to the free nature and unpredictability of watercolour as an art medium it was difficult to get the precise outcome that I wanted. To solve this issue I played around with the scanned watercolour images on Photoshop using digital manipulation as a way of being able to control how I wanted the paint to appear. After further experimentation I felt that the watercolour graphics took too much away from the text.

After taking feedback on board I decided that the visual contrast of digital font and hand drawn font together looked graphically appealing by itself. I felt that the watercolour imagery was too specific; it suggests a very specific 'grungy' concept that I felt would immediately limit my design concepts. After progressing further with sourcing visual inspiration, it became apparent that the visual connotations of watercolour paint swatches did not reflect my genuine brand aesthetics. LSole’s identity became focused on incorporating architectural lines, urban wear and sports luxe influences. This was down to my own personal preference that had become clearer as I progressed through the process of collecting inspiration.

Considering my pictorial inspirations and concepts, I created the logo below. I feel that this logo is minimal yet portrays an understated refinement and style which coincides with my brand's ethos. Its simple appeal enables the logo to be feasible and accessible to a wide audience; its simple design is powerful which reflects the brand's aesthetic.
